Flu Season Tips
Flu season is here and the best way to prevent
influenza is to get a flu shot.
Vaccinations are offered
throughout the flu season. For
information on public health flu
shot programs in Orange County,
Health Care Agency’s Health
Referral Line at (800)
564-8448.
It is especially important for
the following groups to get flu
shots due to risk of
complications:
-
People over 50
-
Children from age six months
to five years
-
People with chronic medical
conditions
-
Pregnant women
-
Healthcare workers who
provide direct patient care
By getting a flu shot you can
protect yourself, as well as
those around you.
Flu shots are also available
through doctors and medical
clinics, at pharmacies and other
retail stores, through some
businesses and workplaces and at
other community locations. An
alternative to the flu shot for
otherwise healthy people between
5 and 49 years of age is the
nasal flu vaccine called
FluMist.
There are other steps you can
take to reduce your chances of
getting the flu and spreading it
to others:
-
Wash your hands frequently
with soap and water. If soap
and water are not available,
use hand gels or sanitizers
-
Cover your mouth and nose
when you cough or sneeze.
Use a tissue, dispose of it
properly and wash your hands
afterwards.
-
Avoid touching your eyes,
nose or mouth. Germs are
often spread when a person
touches something that is
contaminated with germs and
then touches his or her
eyes, nose, or mouth.
-
Avoid close contact with
people who are sick.
-
Stay home from work or
school when you are sick a
fever and/or cough.
This can help prevent others
from getting sick.
If you develop symptoms of
influenza and you are at
increased risk of developing
complications from influenza,
antiviral medications may be
able to ease your symptoms and
help your recovery. However,
they should be taken within two
days after symptoms begin. Talk
to your doctor about whether
antiviral medications are right
for you.
